CURRENT AFFAIRS

Films for Current Affairs strands and slots are – at their best - a very special experience, a breed apart, for film maker and audience alike.

Current Affairs films may break a major news story at greater length than news programmes ever could. They may go behind and beneath a news story to offer wider insight, more detail, and greater resonance from different perspectives. They may – at their very best - reveal what would otherwise not be said or shown. They go beyond just informing or educating. Their revelations and the new light they throw on things may anger, energise, upset, move, touch, affect, and alter many in the audience emotionally and intellectually. Current Affairs films can help bring about real change in people, their lives, in society, in the world.

Praxis has made many Current Affairs films. We hope some have achieved just some of those things. All have aspired to do such things. Some of our Current Affairs films are shown under Investigative, Science and World Affairs. A short clip from one of our favourite Current Affairs films is shown here:

SICK AT HEART

Watch low quality 150kbps / Watch high quality 512kbps

To fully develop their hearts and bodies, children and young people need to engage in at least three 10 minute periods of brisk exercise a week. Walking at pace qualifies as brisk. One in three boys, and two in three girls in the UK do not achieve even this low level of exercise. Hence the country is building up generations to come who are not fit, and will be at even greater risk of heart disease than the present over 40’s – themselves one of the most prone to heart attack in Europe.

This film followed a group of primary children through a week impressive for its lack of exercise, charted the causes of the problem and warned of the health time bomb that is threatening dire consequences in human and economic terms.

“Stories exploring an issue that affects us all –
the horribly poor health of our children,
a human and financial time bomb brought graphically to life”.
(The Daily Mail.)
