Content:
This course will address three situations – being a freelancer, being a sole trader or partnership, being a small “indie” production company. We will examine good practice in terms of management and marketing in each situation, which most people may face at some point. Specifics to be covered will include: market research, CVs, contacts, networking; marketing; key organisations; standard contracts and agreements; personal or business bookkeeping; inland revenue and VAT regulations; invoicing; Health and Safety; Insurances; Negotiation skills; career strategy; business plans and short, mid and long term strategy; other possible areas of business to be considered beyond the standard and obvious.
We will look to explore specific situations that will arise re COMMERCIAL AWARENESS where:
- commercial awareness, commercial thinking are crucial to advancing your interests
- legal, financial and marketing thinking and imagination
These will often be vital. For the freelancer, this might be thinking of other media sectors where your skills would undoubtedly find you work. For the micro business and indie, again it is developing a strategy for developing projects, work, in come streams.
Situations explored will include: different ways to think commercially; different ways to tackle those new possibilities; markets for ideas; possible sources of finance; different approaches to finance; deals and co-productions; multi media possibilities for income and developing business; international markets.
To be even more specific: in terms of markets for ideas we would look to offer a snapshot of the funding situation at present for your film ideas. This would cover opportunities for raising money to make your film through schemes, what different channels and broadcasters are looking for, how best to approach them, effective treatments and applications, what is being funded and why. Other possible markets and strategies, distribution options, the pros and cons of selling your documentary independently or through a distributor and the jargon and contract details, would also be explored.
NB: There is no practical element of filming on this course.
